Abstract
Usefulness of Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage (PTBD) and Radiation Therapy (RT) in inoperable cholangiocarcinoma remains controversial. In this context, we assesed 23 cases with cholangiocarcinoma seen at Chungnam National University
Hospital
from Mar. 1989 to Feb. 1991 and obtained following results.
1) After PTBD, the levels of serum Total Bilirubin and ser5um Alkaline Phosphatase was significantly decreased from 18.6¡¾7.2mg/dl to 6.5¡¾5.5 mg/dl and from 538.9¡¾407.0 IU/L to 299.1¡¾188.3 IU/L (p<0.05).
2) After PTBD, mean survival was significantly increased from 2.1¡¾1.2 months to 6.8¡¾4.1 months (p<0.05).
3) RT after PTBD extend the mean survival than supportive care after PTBD from 5.3¡¾4.1 months to 8.1¡¾4.0 months (p>0.05).
These findings suggest that PTBD and RT improve survival in inoperable cholangiocarcinoma. Further confirmation of the usefulness of PTBD and RT in cholangiocarcinoma waits prospective investigation.
